Independent Life Insurance Company v Independent Life & Accident of Jacksonville | Independent FAQ

After receiving an increasing number of calls from individuals who bought policies from Independent Life and Accident of Jacksonville  a long time ago, as the result of my articles (on this blog and 4structures' Settlement News Network blog ) about the unveiling of Independent Life Insurance Company. I thought this might be helpful information

  1. Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1920 and was based at 1 Independent Drive in Jacksonville Florida. It is not related in any way to Independent Life Insurance Company, established in 2017, a structured settlement only insurance company, which is based in Forth Worth TX and has administrative offices in Jacksonville, FL.
  2. In 1997 Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company merged with American General Life Insurance Company, now a subsidiary of AIG, which is based in Houston, TX.
  3. If you are an insured of Independent Life and Accident or a beneficiary of someone who was an insured or an annuitant of the company you should contact American General at 800-888-2452
  4. Given that Independent Life and Accident's merger into American General occurred 21 years ago,  when it is possible that the first customer service representative you speak to was not even born or was crawling around in diapers, please be patient.  They may or may not know the history. Make sure to explain that "you are a policyholder or beneficiary of a policy with Independent Life and Accident which was merged into American General in 1997"

  • New York Insurance Advertising law requires the full name of the Insurer to be listed along with the city and state of the principal office. Stating that you represent these fine companies using Insurance company logos without the preceding information are also illegal
  • When it comes to settlement documents it is the ultimate responsibility of the lawyers or claims adjusters who receive input concerning the structured settlement aspects of the documents to actually read the entire document, exercise independent thought and advise their clients properly
  • Be aware that financial advisors use of testimonials is prohibited or restricted
  • Most states require that Testimonials represent the CURRENT opinion of the person who made the testimonial. Be prepared to back it up.
