A cash now pusher has managed to get judicial approval in Maryland on a structured settlement factoring transaction in which near term structured settlement payments were valued using an astounding 20% discount rate, by a member of the National Association of Settlement Purchasers. The structured settlement watchdog is in the process of obtaining all of the court papers which are public record for a full inquiry.

Besides shopping around, structured settlement annuitants should also ask their structured settlement annuity issuer for a price. Note that in those cases attorney fees may have to be tacked on and taken into account when making a comparison of alternatives.
Postscript
It is just this sort of shenanigans that led Berkshire Hathaway to introduce its Hardship Exchange Program. In 2018, the discount rate was 6.5%. Prior to that it was 7%.
