One year removed from the 2008 Fall "Vlasic", the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) announced that it will hold a public hearing on Sept. 24 to discuss the past and future roles of Nationally Recognized Statistical Ratings Organizations (NRSRO), namely A.M. Best & Co., Moody's Investor Service, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings services.
Representatives of those credit rating agencies, insurance companies and pension funds will be invited to testify, as will regulators, consumer representatives, leading academics and industry experts on the role of these credit rating agencies in the insurance regulatory system and what changes may be needed in light of the financial crisis. The last thing we all need is to be in another ratings "pickle".
The A.M. Best Guide to Financial Ratings, which accompanies the September 2009 mailing to subscribers of Best Review, is a good read on the subject.
